Artist’s Statement
Frequently a literary tradition, John Malmström re-imagines Magic Realism as a visual form. His tightly rendered watercolours and oil paintings depict everyday objects, but with an unusual or unexpected twist; often injecting allegorical imagery with a touch of humor.
By presenting his images in a visually attractive — even archaic —style, the artist invites viewers to be seduced by their surface accessibility, only to discover deeper meanings upon closer inspection and contemplation of the work.
Recently, Malmström has begun to explore similar directions in music. Once again, he employs an anachronistic form (jazz standards) presented in an accessible style, as an invitation to listeners to explore the familiar with a new, unexpected — sometimes humorous — twist.
